HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men’s hockey team made its annual visit to the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD) to drop off toys generously donated by fans during the last two home games.
All 28 members of the Big Green met at Thompson Arena Monday morning and loaded up a caravan of cars with bags of toys to be delivered.
Once at CHaD, the players hand-selected toys for individual kids based on their age and likes. Delivering them was just the start of the room-to-room visits as many of the players stayed and played games with the kids.
“This is my third year coming here and it’s different every time,” junior and team captain Kevan Kilistoff said. “The guys take a lot of pride on coming to CHaD and doing everything we can to be helpful in our visit that always feels too short.”
Due to the overwhelming generosity of support for the toy drive, nearly a dozen players were pulled away from visiting rooms to help bring toys to the larger collection in a room referred to as the ‘snow pile.’ Those players helped staff members organize and sort the toys into categories that will make it easier for patients to pick out in the future.
“When we’re at Dartmouth, we’re a part of this community so this event means a lot to us,” senior alternate captain Corey Kalk said. “I’m used to coming here, playing with the kids and handing out toys, but this being my last year doing this with the team, I wanted to find out everything I could about CHaD, so I asked every question I could think of.
“I wanted to leave today knowing as much as I could about all the great things they do for the kids here. I definitely think I have a greater understanding and appreciation,” Kalk added.
The team signed autographs and posed for photos, but it seemed that the members of the Big Green were as excited to meet some of their newest and littlest fans.
Once again, the Dartmouth men’s hockey team would like to thank those fans whose donations made Monday’s trip an incredible experience. Additionally, a very big thank you to the members of CHaD’s Child Life Department who facilitate the team’s visit every year and make it so easy and enjoyable for everyone involved.
