SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Dartmouth equestrian team competed at the 2018 IHSA Zone I Championships at the Mount Holyoke Equestrian Center on Saturday.

Thirty-one schools from throughout New England competed with individual Zones qualifiers, while five schools competed in the Zones Collegiate Cup with the hopes of qualifying for Nationals. Individuals and teams competing in the Team Collegiate Cup needed to finish in the top two to qualify for the 2018 IHSA National Finals, which will be held May 3-5 in Harrisburg, Pa.

Junior Olivia Champ earned a spot at Nationals by finishing second in Individual Open over Fences.  Joining Olivia at Nationals will be senior Nathalie Ferneau who earned a spot representing the New England Zone I in the MacDonald Challenge. Ferneau has previously been to Nationals, earning the MacDonald National Reserve Championship in 2015.

In addition to Champ, two other Dartmouth riders also competed as individuals. Olivia also finished eighth in Open Individual Flat, and her co-captain, Claire Bick finished sixth in the same class. Sophomore Megan Poth finished 10th in Novice Flat.

Champ also competed at Zones in the Cacchione Cup against the other four Regional High Point winners. Competing over fences and on the flat, Champ finished in fourth place.

Dartmouth competed as a team in their first Zones Championship since 2014. The team finished third behind Reserve Champion Boston University and Champion Mount Holyoke College, missing the second place needed to proceed to Nationals as a team by a single point.

Champ opened the team championship with a win in Open Fences, and freshman Mahalia Dalmage also took first in her Novice Flat class. Other impressive results included a second-place finish for freshman Sophia Kocher in Walk-Trot-Canter and for sophomore Megan Poth n Intermediate Fences, as well as a third-place finish for Champ in Open Flat.

The team will next host the Ivy Championship Show at Morton Farm on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m.
