GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Dartmouth lightweight rowing team opened the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Regatta on Lake Natoma on Friday. The Big Green, which qualified for the event for the first time since 2014, advanced both of its boats to the Grand Finals.
Competition at the IRA Regatta consists of heats and finals over the course of three days. The top three finishers in each heat advance to the Grand Final, while all others go to the Petite Final.
Rowing in the second of two heats in the 4+, Dartmouth placed second (6:38.82) in the six-crew field, finishing five seconds behind Navy in first (6:33.23) and two seconds ahead of Penn (6:40.82). The Big Green secured a spot in the Grand Final and will race again at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday.
In the first heat of the 4-, the Big Green were third (16:32.62), completing the course less than two seconds behind Cornell in second place (16:30.76). The Grand Final will take place at 8:20 a.m. on Sunday.
Dartmouth will return to the water on Sunday for day three of the 115th annual IRA Regatta.
