GALLOWAY, N.J. — The Dartmouth women’s golf team opened up play at the Checkmate Match Play Challenge today on the Pines Course at Seaview Golf Resort, defeating Wagner in the first round, 3-2, before falling to top-seeded Navy, 5-0.

The Big Green took care of business in its first match against the Seahawks, with senior Jessica Kittelberger enjoying one of the quickest wins on the day by beating her opponent, 7 and 5. Junior Catharine Roddy birdied three consecutive holes to help her take down her counterpart, 5 and 3, while sophomore Maddie Nelson picked up a victory to clinch the match, 4 and 2. Senior Isabelle Kane and freshman Julianne Strauch came up just short in their matches, falling 3 and 2, and 2 and 1, respectively.

While Navy won each of the five matches, each of Dartmouth’s golfers put up a valiant fight to the finish. Kane, Kittelberger and Nelson matches all came down to the 18th hole with each needing to win the hole to tie their opponent, but to no avail. Both Roddy and Strauch finished 17 holes before succumbing, 2 and 1.

Dartmouth will wrap up match play tomorrow in a third-place showdown against Lehigh. Navy will take on host Fairleigh Dickinson for the title.
