A native North Carolinian, Cheong, was a four-year all-state performer — once for Ardrey Kell High School as a freshman and all three years at Charlotte Latin. At Ardrey Kell in the fall of 2013, she was named the South Charlotte Girls Player of the Year after posting the lowest scoring average among high school golfers and placing second at the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) Women's Golf States, leading her team to a state title.
At Charlotte Latin, Cheong was the individual runner-up once again as a junior in 2015, leading her team to a second-place finish at the NCISAA Women's Golf States. She also qualified and participated in the 2015 U.S. Women's Amateur as well. As a senior with a 0.5 handicap, Cheong was one of 12 juniors and seniors around the country to be recognized for athletic and academic excellence by being named to the 2016 American Junior Golf Association Transamerica Scholastic Junior All-America Team after placing eighth at the NCISAA Women's Golf States.
Cheong will further bolster the Big Green women's golf team that played some of its best golf in recent years, including rising-junior Catharine Roddy who became the first Dartmouth golfer in 17 years to earn a spot on the All-Ivy League First Team. The team finished among the top five in six of their eight tournaments, finishing as high as third on two occasions.
