GOLD RIVER, Calif.  – The Dartmouth heavyweight rowing team opened competition at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Regatta on Lake Natoma on Friday morning. All four of the Big Green's boats will compete in the semifinals on Saturday.

Competition at the IRA Regatta consists of heats, repechage (second-chance races), semifinals and finals over the course of three days. The top two finishers in each heat advance to the semifinal round, while the remaining crews are reassigned to repechage races, where they will look to re-gain entry into the semis. The top three crews in each semifinal advance into the six-boat Grand Final field.

Rowing in the third of four heats in the second varsity, Dartmouth placed fourth (5:54.44). The Big Green completed the race just a second behind Wisconsin (5:53.43), but left a large gap between them and Hobart in fifth place (6:03.48). Later that afternoon in the fourth repechage, Dartmouth won (6:03.29), leaving over three seconds between it and Stanford in second (6:06.43) and advancing to the first semifinal.

In the fourth heat of the third varsity eight, Dartmouth took third (5:54.81), finishing behind Yale in first (5:47.23) and Princeton (5:50.21) in second. Syracuse followed just over half a second behind the Green (5:55.52). Racing again in the second repechage, the Big Green took second (6:08.09), finishing less than two seconds out of Wisconsin in first, making it into the second semifinal.

Heat two of the first varsity was a very close one; Dartmouth took third (5:44.32), completing the course less than four seconds behind California in first place (5:40.39). The Big Green got their second repechage victory of the day a few hours later (5:48.31), out-finishing Navy by just half a second. They will race again in the first semifinal.

Dartmouth took fifth (6:42.67) in the first heat of the varsity four, but came back later in the day to finish in second place in the third repechage (6:46.75), edging Holy Cross (6:47.40). The Big Green will row in the first semifinal.

Day two of the 115th IRA Regatta will continue on Saturday morning.
