HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth Athletics community was saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete and coach Maribel Sanchez Souther ’96 on Saturday, Dec. 31 following a long battle with cancer (obituary).
Souther was a standout member of the Big Green women’s cross country and track & field teams during her four years in Hanover as a student. A four-time All-American and seven-time Ivy League Heptagonal Champion, she solidified herself as one of the best runners in the history of the program.
After college, she remained in the area before leaving to pursue a professional running career that led to her qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Trials.
Looking to pass on her passion and insights for the sport she loved, Souther returned to Dartmouth as an assistant coach in 2002, becoming the head coach of the cross country team in 2003, a position she held until stepping down in 2010.
A loving wife, mother, friend and coach, she leaves behind her husband John, her three young children Jackson (8), Paco (6) and Christine (2), and countless teammates, friends and student-athletes who were shaped by their relationships with Maribel over the course of her life.
Her husband has worked with the Development Office at Dartmouth to establish a scholarship in Maribel’s memory. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to The Maribel Sanchez Souther 1996 Memorial Scholarship Fund. An online form is available here.
