ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman James Turner turned in the best Dartmouth score in any of the three rounds at the Cornell Invitational, carding a three-under 68 in the final round to help the Big Green take fifth place overall at nine-over par (861) in the 16-team field. Turner and sophomore Riley Griffin finished the tournament in a tie for 10th place at one-over par (214).
Temple, which began the day in third two strokes back of Yale and one behind the Big Green, eked out a one-stroke victory over the Bulldogs with a three-over 855. But the title wasn’t clinched until the final Owl, John Barone, sank his par putt on the 18th hole of the par-71, 6,904-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. But Barone was edged out by a single stroke for medalist honors by Yale’s James Nicholas, who posted a 67-73-69—209 (-4) thanks to his birdie putt on 18.
Host Cornell made a run at the top with the tournament’s best round with a 280 (-4) today, but fell two strokes shy of Temple to place third. St. Bonaventure also made a charge with a three-under 281 as a team to climb two spots into fourth, two strokes ahead of Dartmouth.
Turner rarely found trouble on the course in his final round, dropping four birdies and a single bogey on the day. Griffin was even more consistent with 14 pars, two birdies and a bogey going into the final hole, but suffered a double-bogey to fall back five spots on the leaderboard when all was said and done.
Sophomore Will Bednarz began the day in a tie for second, three strokes off the pace, struggled a bit early in the round at three-over par after seven holes. But he gathered himself and made par on 10 of the last 11 holes to right his ship and finish up with a four-over 75 to tie for 13th, one stroke behind Turner and Griffin with a two-over 215.
Adding to the Big Green total was senior captain Ian Kelsey who had a bit of a wild round with five birdies, six pars, six bogeys and a double for a 74 (+2), leaving him tied for 42nd overall with a 10-over 223.
Dartmouth returns for its home tournament next weekend when it hosts the Quechee Invitational at the Quechee Country Club next Saturday and Sunday.
