Captains showed why they have been chosen to lead their respective Big Green teams this past weekend. Captain Morgan Martinelli led the big green softball team to a 2-1 record on the weekend over the visiting Columbia Lions. Fellow captain Ian Kelsey won the Cornell Spring Golf Invitational, carding a four-under 140.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Morgan Martinelli, Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., 3B, Softball
Junior Morgan Martinelli helped lead the Dartmouth softball team to a series victory over Columbia during the home-opening weekend. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Martinelli hit a two-run homer in the first inning to get the Big Green on the board, then provided the walk-off hit at the end by beating out an infield single for a 5-4 victory. Her sacrifice fly in the series finale proved vital as Dartmouth came away with another 5-4 triumph. For the series, she was 4-for-10 with the round-tripper and four RBIs.
Ian Kelsey, Sr, Deerfield, Ill., Men’s Golf
Ian Kelsey, captain of the men’s golf team, lived up to his title by winning the Cornell Spring Invitational this past weekend by carding a four-under 140. The senior drained six birdies in the two rounds with only a pair of bogeys to claim medalist honors and help Dartmouth tie for the team title with the host Big Red. It was the first tournament victory of his collegiate career, and first by a Big Green golfer in almost two full years. His previous top showing had been a second-place finish at the 2016 Ivy League Championship.
