PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman Schae Nelson was tabbed the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office Monday. Nelson earns the final weekly award of the year as Dartmouth wrapped up the regular season Sunday afternoon.
In the weekend series against Brown, Nelson recorded a .625 batting average going five-for-eight at the plate. The Montgomery, Texas native helped the Big Green in all three wins against the Bears. The team needed to win at least two of three to host the Ivy League Championship Series this weekend.
Nelson finished with six RBI, including one home run, four runs scored and two walks on the weekend.
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Nelson knocked in two runs on a single to left-center in her first at-bat of the day. She later plated a run on an RBI single from teammate Taylor Ward. During game two Nelson recorded her fifth home run of the season with a three-run shot to take a 3-1 lead. As the Bears came back to take the lead in the sixth it was Nelson who scored the tying run in the bottom of the inning after being walked and advancing to third.
In the series finale, the catcher earned her 28th start of the season and went three-for-three with one RBI and scored two runs. With a single to left in each of her at bats, Nelson drove in the second run of the day in the bottom of the first after Tessa Grossman walked with the bases loaded.
This weekend Nelson and her team host Harvard for a chance at the Ivy crown starting Saturday in a doubleheader at the Dartmouth Softball Park. Gametime is 1:00 pm and will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network, now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app for Android and Apple devices.
