HANOVER, N.H. – For the first time this season, the Dartmouth softball team has swept the Ivy League’s weekly awards. Claire Bird was named Player of the Week, Breanna Ethridge was tabbed as Pitcher of the Week, while Calista Almer garnered Co-Rookie of the Week honors as announced by the league office on Monday.
The Big Green won all four of its games this past weekend, taking two from Cornell and Princeton. Bird had a fantastic weekend at the plate hitting .600 with a 1.300 slugging percentage. In Dartmouth’s 6-0 victory over the Tigers, Bird went 3-for-3 with a triple, home run and three RBIs. She followed that performance up going 2-for-4 with another triple and RBI in the second game of the twinbill against Princeton. This week’s award is the first Ancient Eight accolade for the catcher from Rapids City, Illinois.
In the circle, Ethridge started three of the four games where she went 3-0 and picked up her first save of 2017. On Friday against the Big Red, Ethridge allowed just three runs and struck out seven. The Loganville, Georgia native got the start in Game 1 vs. Princeton on Saturday where she hurled a complete game and did not surrender a run.
Almer continued her terrific rookie season in Hanover by earning Co-Rookie of the week honors for the second time in her career. Her best performance of the weekend came on Friday against Cornell when she went 4-for-4 with a triple and two stolen bases. The Pollock Pines, California native currently leads the Big Green with 16 runs scored and is tied for second on the team with 27 hits.
Dartmouth returns to action next weekend hosting Brown for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m. All four games can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
