HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team took a pair of games from Princeton in a doubleheader at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green shutout the Tigers, 6-0 in Game 1 before pulling off a, 6-5 come from behind victory in Game 2 to complete the sweep.
With the victories, Dartmouth improves to 5-21-1 overall, 4-3 in Ivy League play, while Princeton falls to 11-13, 4-2 in conference play.
In Game 1, the Big Green sent their winningest pitcher, Breanna Ethridge to circle, where she tossed a complete game with three strikeouts. The first contest of the day quickly became a pitchers’ dual as not a single run was recorded for either squad until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the third, Dartmouth threatened by loading the bases, but did not score. In the top of the fourth, the Tigers put a runner on third and that’s where she remained until the end of the inning.
The Big Green broke the game open in the fourth plating a trio of runs with just one swing of the bat. Claire Bird launched her first homerun of the season into left field with a pair of runners on base to give Dartmouth the 3-0 lead. The Big Green tacked on two more runs in the fifth courtesy of another long ball, this time from Maddie Damore, who hit her team-leading fourth home run to left field with Alyssa Jorgensen on base.
Ahead 5-0, Dartmouth got one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Bird led off the inning with a triple to right field, before Tiffany Dyson scored Bird on a base hit through the shortstop. The Tigers had one last chance in the top of the seventh, but Ethridge was able to close the door on the Tigers to earn the shutout victory.
In Game 2, Morgan Ebow was sent to the circle where she got in a little trouble early. Allison Harvey scored on Kaylee Grant’s double to left field for the early 1-0 Princeton lead. The Big Green were able to get this run back quickly in the bottom half of the inning when Karen Chaw smacked a two-out double down the field line to score Calista Almer, tying the game 1-1.
The Tigers’ bats exploded in the top of the second with four runs for the 5-1 advantage. After a lead off single and a walk, Mikayla Blaska reached on an error which plated Joey Smith. Princeton then pulled off a double steal, putting two runners in scoring position, which set up Harvery for a two-RBI single. The Tiger’s last run of the inning came when Ebow walked Alex Viscusi with the bases loaded before getting Danielle Dockx to ground out to end the inning.
Dartmouth got one run back in the third and fourth innings to cut the deficit to 5-3. First Morgan Martinelli hit a solo home run to center field before Jorgensen’s RBI single in the fourth brought the Big Green back within two.
In the top of the fifth, Dartmouth retook the lead for good scoring three runs. With runners at the corners and one out, Bird laid down a bunt single to send Jade Bravo across. After a fly out to right field, Lourlin Lara hit a double to left field, scoring Taylor Ward. The next batter was Almer who reached on an error by the third basemen, allowing Bird to come across for the game-winning run.
A scoreless sixth gave way to the seventh when Ethridge returned to the circle, where she recorded the final three outs to earn her first save of the season and preserve the win for Ebow and the Big Green.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow where the Big Green will take on Cornell in makeup game of Friday’s doubleheader. First pitch is at 12:30 and the game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network with Brett Franklin on the call.
