HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women’s soccer team took advantage of its opportunities Sunday afternoon at Burnham Field, defeating Stony Brook, 2-1.
Capitalizing on a penalty kick from Remy Borinsky in the first half, fellow senior Bianca Ribi scored again for the Big Green in the 68th minute to extend the lead to 2-0 with what proved to be the eventual game winner.
The Seawolves’ Kaitlin Loughren put one through the pipes in the 86th minute, creating an intense last few minutes of the game where the visitors tried to control their possessions for another goal, but were unable to do so.
Sunday’s win moves the Big Green to 2-0-0, while Stony Brook falls to 2-2-0 overall with the loss.
The tempo of Sunday’s match was much like the aggressive speed of Friday’s win over FIU for Dartmouth, and head coach Ron Rainey said the turn-around between games went smoothly.
“I am really excited about the Friday-Sunday transition,” Rainey said. “I really think through 85 minutes we did a nice job defensively, at times not having total possession, but not giving up chances. When we took people on and ran at people we were able to put them on their heels, which was great. “In the end you don’t want to give up chances and I felt we did a good job of that for the majority of the game today, and it was really cool to see especially with it being the second game in three days,” he added.
While the Big Green’s first score came from a penalty kick by Borinsky, the second goal came as the result of a pass from Lorna MacFarlane to Ribi, who beat a Stony Brook defender inside and kicked the ball to the lower left side of the goal. Ribi now has one goal and one assist on the season, while MacFarlane tallied her first collegiate assist with the play.
Stony Brook and Dartmouth battled for possession throughout the late minutes of the second half following the lofty goal by Loughren from about 30 yards out, but the Big Green were able to defensively maneuver the ball in its favor and keep the Seawolves from scoring again.
This was the second start for freshman keeper Mariel Gordon, who finished with five saves. The Big Green outshot the Seawolves, 11-7, with six of the 11 on goal. Stony Brook’s keeper Sofia Manner ended with four saves.
Dartmouth will hit the road this week for a pair of West Coast games. The Big Green take on Long Beach State Friday, Sept. 1 at 10 p.m. EST, and face Pepperdine on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. EST.
