HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women’s basketball team lost its second game of the season to Maine on Saturday, 64-51.
The loss moves the Big Green to 6-2 on the season while the Black Bears improve to 6-4.
Senior Kate Letkewicz led the Big Green offense with 15 points, Cy Lippold and Emily Slagle scored a combined 22 points, but the Black Bears had four players who put up double digit numbers, and scored 20 points off of turnovers as a team to take the win.
Maine took an early 5-0 lead and Dartmouth fought through the first quarter to get back in it, but shooting 7-for-18 were unable to tie the game up or take the lead, the road team had a four-point advantage, 24-20, at the end of the period.
The Big Green turned the defense on strong in the second quarter and held the Black Bears to only eight points, scoring 12 themselves and tying the game up for halftime.
Entering the third quarter, the home squad had an opportunity to take the lead and keep it, when senior Andi Norman hit a three in the opening minute, but Maine came roaring back. Trading baskets the entire third period, the lead changed three times and the score was tied three times. A late layup by Slagle put Dartmouth within two points of tying it up before starting the fourth quarter.
In the final 10 minutes of play, turnovers and missed shots plagued the Big Green, who scored only five points in the fourth period. While the home team fought to regain possession and put up shots, the Black Bears were finding the basket easily and scored 15 points to end with the 13-point lead.
Dartmouth now travels to Boulder, Colorado to take on the Colorado Buffaloes on Monday, December 11 at 9 p.m. eastern time.
