The Dartmouth women’s volleyball team returns to Hanover this weekend for the Big Green Invitational. During their first home tournament in two seasons, the Green and White welcome Central Connecticut State, Manhattan, Providence and Grand Canyon into Leede Arena. The two-day tournament will see five matches of action each day.

Big Green Tidbits

Rank and File – For the first time in program history, Dartmouth’s incoming class received national recognition. The eight freshmen were ranked in the top 100 by The premier prep-site listed the Big Green as one of 44 institutions from across the nation to receive a spot on the “High Honorable Mention” list.

Welcome to the Party – During the first weekend of action, a pair of freshmen had breakout performances. Stacy Benton led the Big Green with 66 assists and 16 digs as Dartmouth went 2-1. In the opener against Marist, Benton had 29 assists and 12 digs as the Big Green fell in four. Versus UMass Lowell, Benton led the attack once again with 33 assists and three digs. Through three games, Emily Astarita had 24 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks. Against Marist, Astarita had a team-best 12 kills

On a Roll – After an impressive opening weekend, freshman Molly Kornfeind was named to the Ivy League weekly honor roll. The recognition didn’t stop there as Kornfeind was named to the All-Volley in the Valley Tournament Team along with Astarita. The six-foot outside hitter had a team-best 26 kills in the opening weekend of the season. Kornfeind added 15 digs, three blocks and a service ace as Dartmouth went 2-1. Kornfeind’s best game of her first collegiate weekend action came against UMass Lowell as she had 14 kills and eight digs in a 3-0 Big Green triumph. During the game versus the Riverhawks Kornfeind had an attack percentage of .440.

Killer Power – As a team at the Volley in the Valley Tournament the Big Green had 118 kills for an average of 11.8 kills per set.

New Faces – Dartmouth head coach Erin Lindsey added Dee Smith to the coaching staff in the offseason as she joins Jose Lugo on the sidelines. The eight freshmen also look to make an impact during their first year with the Big Green.

Scouting the Devils – Central Connecticut heads to the Upper Valley fresh off 3-0 win against San Jose State, snapping a two-match losing streak. The Devils are in the middle of a 10-game road trip to open the season. Heather Trueman leads the team with 52 kills. Cassidy Stankowski has a team-best 38 digs and Makenna Lommori has 179 assists.

Scouting the Jaspers – Manhattan enters the Big Green Invitational having lost back-to-back games. After winning four of the first five contests, the Jaspers have struggled of late, falling to American and Sacred Heart. During the two-match skid, Manhattan has won three games, falling 3-1 and 3-2..  Ellie Wiekamp leads the team with 78 kills while Brooke Zywick has a team-best 135 digs and Jade Gray has 150 assists.

Scouting the Friars – Providence comes to town fresh off a home victory against Ivy League foe Brow. After starting the year 0-2, the Friars have won five-of-their-last-six.  Mackenzie Ziegler leads the team with 72 kills with Michelle Cruz posting a team-high 128 digs and Jordan Wiesler leading 249 assists.

Scouting the Lopes – In the first season in Division I, Grand Canyon got off to a slow start dropping its first four contests.  Last time out, the Lopes topped Weber State, 3-2. Kaitlynn Ausmus leads the team with 60 kills. Jessica Posse has a team-best 127 assists and Mackenzie Phelps has 114 digs.

 Up Next – Following the Big Green Invitational, the team hosts the Dartmouth Duels next weekend in Hanover. The Big Green welcome UConn, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Rhode Island into Leede Arena.
