MALIBU, Calif. – Dartmouth women’s tennis senior Kristina Mathis opened play at the 2017 Oracle ITA Masters on Thursday, competing in both singles and doubles matches. The national event is hosted by Pepperdine and the Malibu Racquet Club.

In the first round of singles, Mathis took on Oklahoma’s Lily Miyazaki, who was ranked No. 19 in the ITA preseason rankings released earlier this month. The Big Green co-captain played hard, but fell by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

She paired up with Columbia’s Victor Pham in mixed doubles and the Ivy League duo defeated Madara Straume (UNC Wilmington) and Felipe Sarrasague (Elon), 6-3, before getting a default win over Sara Daavettila (UNC) and Petros Chrvsochos (Wake Forest).

Mathis will return to the court on Friday morning to play back draw singles against Seattle’s Michelle Lui. The doubles quarterfinal will take place after that.
