HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced its weekly baseball awards this afternoon, and Dartmouth freshman Bennett McCaskill was selected as the Rookie of the Week for his performance in a series victory over Columbia this past weekend.
McCaskill, son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Kirk McCaskill, was 3-for-8 as the starting catcher in all three games against the Lions, including his first collegiate home run. That four-bagger led off the bottom of the third of the second game with Dartmouth trailing Columbia, 4-0, igniting a seven-run stanza as the Big Green went on to a 10-4 triumph to clinch the series. In the opener, the native of Cardiff, California, went 2-for-3 with a run and a sacrifice to contribute to the 5-4 victory.
After a slow start to his Dartmouth career, McCaskill is hitting .300 (6-for-20) since the team returned to the Northeast from its spring break trip to California, with a double, homer, three walks, three runs and three RBIs. He also has shown a strong arm behind the plate, throwing out 40 percent (8 of 20) potential base stealers.
McCaskill is the first Big Green freshman to be named the league’s Rookie of the Week since Trevor Johnson — also the son of a former big leaguer (Mark Johnson) — picked up his second such honor last year on April 4.
Dartmouth (7-14-1, 3-2-1 Ivy) is currently playing UMass Lowell at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park, and will travel to Cornell (5-14, 1-5 Ivy) for a three-game, Ivy League series this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday and the finale on Sunday. All of these games are being streamed on the Ivy League Network, now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app for Android and Apple devices.
