HANOVER, N.H. — Apparently the Chicago Cubs like Dartmouth right-handed pitchers. Already employing Kyle Hendricks ’12 in their starting rotation, the Cubs selected Big Green senior Duncan Robinson in the ninth round with the 284th overall pick of the Major League Baseball Draft on Friday afternoon. Robinson is the 38th selection of a Dartmouth player since the draft’s inception in 1965, and the only Ivy Leaguer taken in the first 10 rounds this year.

A 6-6, 220-pound senior from Houston, Texas, Robinson was named to the All-Ivy League First Team for the third straight year this spring after posting a 3.28 ERA and 4-6 record while leading the conference with 73 strikeouts. He completed seven games, which is tied for third in the nation, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.43) and walks issued per nine innings (0.92) also rank among the top 10 among Division I pitchers. At the end of March, he struck out a career-high 12 batters in a nine-inning, complete-game victory over Lehigh, then tossed a four-hit shutout with eight more punchouts at South Florida in his next outing to become the first Dartmouth pitcher with consecutive nine-inning complete games in 15 years.

The 2015 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, Robinson finished his career with a 17-11 record (tied for the fifth-most victories in program history) and the second-lowest ERA for the Big Green in the past 40 years at 3.07. His 174 strikeouts tie him for the ninth-most at Dartmouth, coincidentally equaling Hendricks’ total from his career.

Robinson is the first Big Green player chosen in the draft since Joe Purritano was taken in the 30th round last year by the Cincinnati Reds, and just the fifth selected in the first 10 rounds over the past 20 years.
