CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Dartmouth sailing team finished seventh with 291 points after the final day of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Sperry Women's National Championship at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
“The women had a great week and confirmed that they can compete with the best women in the country,” said head coach, Justin Assad. “Our starting skippers are young, so this was an experience building event. This was one of the most competitive women's fleets we have seen in years and we feel great about our women going forward. We sailed smart and fast all week in very tricky conditions and the women have a lot to be proud of. Additionally, we sailed seven different women, so it was a genuine team effort.”
The seventh place finish is the Big Green fifth consecutive top ten performance at ICSA Nationals. On the final day on the water, Dartmouth recorded four top five finishes, including one victory. Ivy League foe Yale took home the Gerald C. Miller Trophy with 185 points, followed by Boston College with 208 and Coast Guard with 259.
Racing began at 10 a.m. in sunny and warm conditions. The winds were from the southwest at about seven knots. The temperatures stayed in the high 70s and low 80s all day. The wind in the afternoon increased and became puffy and by the end of the racing day the wind picked up again to about 12 knots and shifted more west-southwest.
The Big Green return to the water for its final regatta of the season. Dartmouth will take part in the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship which begins on Tuesday, May 30 in South Carolina.
