HANOVER, N.H. — A total of 976 NCAA Division I athletics teams were honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), with Dartmouth leading the way with 25 such teams. This was the second straight year the Big Green had the most teams honored, and they have been among the top three in each of the eight years the awards have been bestowed. The award is given to teams that have an APR among the top 10 percent in their respective sport.

Of the 25 teams, 14 have received the honor in each of the seven years — women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and men’s outdoor track and field. Dartmouth has a total of 182 awards (an average of 22.8), second only to Yale’s 188.

The top two schools in this year’s report came from the Ivy League with Brown ranking second with 20, while Yale tied for seventh with 14. In all, the Ancient Eight amassed 117 of the 976 awards, or 12.0 percent, with the Big East a distant second with 72.

Each NCAA varsity team is given a score on a scale from 1-1000 (1000 meaning that every individual on that team was academically eligible for the following term and either returned to school or graduated). Individual teams with a score below 925 over a multi-year period are subject to penalties. All of the 28 Dartmouth teams measured were well above the penalty line, with an average score of 998.3. The current report measures enrollment from the academic years 2006-07 through 2011-12.

Men’s lightweight and heavyweight rowing, men’s and women’s squash, coed equestrian and coed sailing do not contest NCAA Championships and therefore were not measured.

Full APRs for all teams will be released June 11.
