Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Dartmouth's Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
On the football field and the golf course this week, Dartmouth was represented by two outstanding athletes. Junior Nick Schwieger led the football team to an opening day victory over Bucknell with 216 yards rushing. Senior Katie Gulemi placed sixth at the Dartmouth Golf Invitational.
Dartmouth Male Athlete of the Week
(Norton, Mass.), Football, Junior
Schwieger rolled through the Bucknell defense for 216 yards rushing -- the sixth most in school history -- and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Green to a 43-20 victory in their season opener. His first score was a 56-yard run to give Dartmouth the lead for good late in the third quarter, while his second was an 11-yard jaunt to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. In addition, the junior led the team with five catches, going for 57 yards to compile 273 all-purpose yards, the third-highest total in Big Green history and surpassing his previous best of 247 which is fourth. Schwieger was named the Ivy League Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance and currently leads the nation in rushing yards per game.
Dartmouth Female Athlete of the Week:
(Fairfield, Conn.), Women's Golf, Senior
Gulemi paced the Big Green in their first tournament of the fall, placing sixth out of 115 golfers at the Dartmouth Invitational. The senior was eight-over par for the tournament, just four strokes behind the leader, while making par on 20 of the 36 holes and collecting five birdies. She got stronger as the tournament went, shaving four strokes off her first round total of 78 with a two-over 74 in the final round. Last year, Gulemi was the team's low scorer in five of the nine tournaments in which Dartmouth played.
