BERKELEY, Calif. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped its season opener, 4-2, to California in non-conference action on Friday evening at Maxwell Family Field in a game that was televised on the Pac-12 Network.
Dartmouth held the lead for next 9:46 before Sydney Earle put California (2-1) on the board. Earle’s first tally of the season was one of four unanswered by the Bears. Andrea Earle scored a pair of markers sandwiched around a Jordan O’Reilly goal as California stretched its lead to 4-1 midway through the second half.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Maggie Scanlon pulled the Big Green within two at 4-2 as she scored an unassisted goal. Scanlon received the ball at the six and fired a shot past California goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson.
Down the stretch, California held off Dartmouth en route to a victory in its home opener.
Ellen Meyer made three saves for the Big Green in a losing effort while Hendrickson turned aside eight shots to earn her second win of the year for the Bears.
Quaglia’s goal marked the fourth straight year in which the Big Green scored first in their season opener. The Green and White lost the first game of the season for the first time since a 9-4 defeat against Maine in 2009.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Sunday as it squares off with UC Davis at Maxwell Family Field. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
