COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second straight game, an early goal from the opposition put the Dartmouth field hockey team behind the eight ball.
This time, American's Alex McMackin scored the afternoon's opening tally just 1:10 into Saturday's game at Maryland's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex as part of the 2012 Terrapin Invitational.
The early marker was the Eagles' first of their three goals on the day as they defeated the Big Green, 3-0, to improve to 1-4 on the season. After opening with a 3-1 victory on the road at UMass last Friday night, Dartmouth has dropped to 1-2 overall in the young 2012 season.
Saturday's contest was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
McMackin scored her second of the game in the 57th minute of action to make it 3-0 after Carly Atchinson's first of the year put her team up two with five minutes remaining in the first half.
Once again, the Big Green split time between their two goalkeepers as senior Jenna Stearns (Thornton, N.H.) started and sophomore Ellen Meyer (Prospect, Ky.) played the second half with each making two saves apiece.
American's Ashley Dalisera turned aside all four shots she faced in goal to pick up her fist win of the fall.
Junior Maggie Scanlon (Shaker Heights, Ohio) led the Big Green with two shots on goal in the game.
The Eagles held advantages in both total shots (15-10) and corners (8-5) on the day.
Dartmouth will now turn its attention to No. 3 Maryland for a Sunday afternoon game in the finale of the Terrapin Invitational. The Terps knocked off UMass Saturday morning, 5-0, to improve to 4-1 this season.
