PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 19 Dartmouth women’s rowing competed in the Ivy Round Robin on a chilly Saturday on Lake Carnegie.
The event brought seven of the eight Ivy League schools to one location to condense cup racing into one weekend. Yale, Columbia Penn and Dartmouth faced off the Yale Class of ’85 Cup, while, later on in the day, the Green took on Princeton, Radcliffe and Penn for the Class of ’84 Plaque. The Big Green saw improvements in all of their races from the morning.
"It's always exciting to line up against other Ivies," head coach Wendy Bordeau said. "We know we need to be at our best. Unfortunately, we stumbled in the morning races, but we refocused and rallied for the afternoon. All of our crews executed strong improvements between races. We are very much a work in progress and learn a ton with each trip down the course. We're building confidence and consistency in our speed."
In the morning session, the Bulldogs won the Varsity 8 (6:52.7) to retain the Class of ’85 Cup. They were followed by Penn (7:02.1) and Dartmouth (7:05.4). In the second varsity, Dartmouth took second (7:13.8), finishing behind Yale (6:58.3) and ahead of Penn (7:23.8). The Big Green were third in the third varsity (7:44.4), completing the 2,000-meter course sandwiched between Yale (7:38.1) and Columbia (8:04.5).
The Green’s Varsity 4A was third (8:39.3), finishing closely behind the Quakers (8:39.3), but leaving a large gap between themselves and the Lions (8:51.3). In the Varsity 4B, Dartmouth placed third (8:25.6), giving Penn a run for its money (8:21.5).
Later that afternoon, Princeton won the Class of ’84 Cup by finishing first in the Varsity 8 (6:35.2), but Dartmouth was close behind to take second (6:42.9) and out-finished Radcliffe by less than five seconds. The second Varsity was very close but saw similar results to the 1V: the Tigers won (7:00.8) and were followed soon after by the Big Green (7:03.4) and the Black and White (7:09.9).
In the third Varsity, Dartmouth was second again (7:33.8), coming in between Princeton (7:28.4) and Radcliffe (7:34.7). The Green’s Varsity 4A completed the course with a time of 8:01.4 to take third, leaving less than four seconds between them and the Quakers. In the 4B, Dartmouth was second (8:14.9) and finished eight seconds ahead of Penn in third.
On Saturday, April 21, the Big Green will take on Boston College and the University of Rhode Island in Boston.
