KINGSTON, R.I. – The Dartmouth women’s crew team opened the 2013 racing season with a dual regatta against Rhode Island and Rutgers on Saturday (April 6). The Big Green boated a varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four.

In a day in which the weather conditions were challenging for all, the Big Green’s top boat couldn’t row through the conditions. The host Rams won the varsity eight race with a time of 8:23.23, ahead of the Big Green crew, which finished second with a time of 8:26.21.

“The elements were very challenging for everyone today,” said Dartmouth head coach Wendy Bordeau. “It was very heavy and very rough water and we credit Rhode Island for rowing a composed and gutsy race in the first varsity eight.”

The crews battled the elements throughout the race and the Big Green were able to keep pace, but Dartmouth gave up a length in the middle thousand and Rhode Island was able to power through at that point and win the race.

The Big Green’s varsity four had a similar plight in its race and placed second with a time of 9:39.30, 10 seconds off the winning time of 9:29.79 from the host team.

Despite the conditions, the Big Green’s second varsity eight and second varsity four each weathered the elements and won their races. In the second varsity eight race, Dartmouth won with a time of 8:25. 97, more than 20 seconds ahead of the next crew from Rhode Island, who crossed with a time of 8:47.46.

The second varsity four also posted similar results, winning with a time of 9:17.56, ahead of the Ram’s crew of who took second with a time of 9:56.36.

“The second varsity eight and second varsity four were determined to win their races and did just that. It’s still early in the season and we’re still trying to figure out where everything fits together.”

Dartmouth will be back in action on Sunday (April 7) when they race Columbia and Northeastern in New Jersey.
