Big Green Tidbits
Ivy League Championship This Weekend -
The Big Green look to wrap up the 2012 season with a good showing at the 2012 Ivy League Championship. This is the first season the Big Green will row for an Ivy League Championship, previously the Eastern Sprints, determined the Ivy League champion. The Big Green can increase their chances for a bid to the 2012 NCAA Championship with a strong showing this weekend.

Championship Format - The format for the 2012 Championship consists of heats and finals. There will be two heats of each race with the top three boats of each heat advancing to the grand finals. The remainder of the competitors will race in the petite finals.

Recap of 2011 Eastern Sprints - Last season, the Big Green had a great showing at Eastern Sprints. The Big Green's first varsity eight took third place, while the second varsity eight took fourth place. The Big Green's strong showing at Sprints propelled them to an NCAA bid, its second appearance at the national event in the last three seasons.

Familiar Foes - Dartmouth will be looking to gain some speed on its Ivy League counterparts at the Ivy Championships. Dartmouth had competitive races with each of its Ivy League counterparts during the racing season, including a narrow victory over Yale to claim the Class of 1985 Cup. The Big Green has dropped close races to Cornell, Princeton and Radcliffe. The Big Green has defeated Columbia and Penn and has yet to race Brown.

Dartmouth Wins Class of 1985 Cup During Cup Races - The Big Green women's team races for four cups throughout the regular season. Dartmouth races for the Class of 1985 Cup with Yale, the Parent Cup with Cornell, the Class of 1984 Plaque with Princeton and Penn and the O'Leary Cup with Radcliffe and Syracuse. This season, Dartmouth claimed the Class of 1985 Cup in dramatic fashion against the Yale Bulldogs. Dartmouth has claimed at least one Cup in each of the last eight seasons. The last time Dartmouth won the Class of 1985 Cup prior to this season was in 1998.

The Class of 1985 Cup is Back in Hanover  - In its first Cup race of the 2012 season, Dartmouth claimed victory in the Class of 1985 Cup, its first win in the race since 1998. The race wasn't without drama, as the race had to be decided by video evidence. The times were declared a dead heat but the race was awarded to Dartmouth on an official's review of the video evidence.

CMax Rankings Released - This week's CMax rankings were released and the Dartmouth first varsity eight is ranked among the fastest boats in the country. The Big Green is ranked No. 16 and is 12.3 seconds behind the nation's top boat from Virginia.  The CMax rankings are used to provide a relative estimate of how fast a team is.

Ivy League Women's Poll Released - The final Ivy League women's poll was released on May 1.  Dartmouth's first varsity eight checks in at No. 6 while the second varsity eight checks in at No. 8. In the four's the first varsity four is ranked No. 6 and the second varsity four rounds out the Dartmouth boats also at No. 6.

Dartmouth In the Rankings - The Big Green are at No. 20 in this week's CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll. The Big Green opened the season at No. 17 in the initial poll released on March 15. Princeton leads the Ivy League contingent in the No. 6 spot. Yale (No. 10), Brown (No. 11), Radcliffe (No. 13), Cornell (No. 16) and Columbia (No. 19) round out the Ivy League boats.

Chapman To Compete For Spot on USRowing Under-23 Squad - Senior captain Jamie Chapman (Traverse City, Mich.) has been selected as one of the 23 athletes to train the 2012 Women's U23 National Team Camp in Syracuse, N.Y., and Princeton, N.J. The camp will select the women's eight and quadruple sculls that will compete at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 11-15 in Trakai, Lithuania.

Dartmouth Opens Season Ranked No. 17 in CRCA/US Rowing Poll - The Big Green, fresh off an appearance at the 2011 NCAA Championships, earned a No. 17 ranking in the initial poll on March 15. The Big Green is one of six Ivy League schools ranked in the preseason poll. Princeton checked in at No. 3 to lead all Ivy League schools while Brown is at No. 4. Yale enters at No. 7, Radcliffe is No. 12 and Cornell is No. 15. Penn and Columbia also received votes.

Coach Levash Is Back  - Head coach Wendy Levash is entering her eighth season at Dartmouth in 2012. Levash is assisted by former Big Green rower, Anne Kennedy, who has been on staff since 2010.
