Big Green Open Fall Slate at 48th Annual Head of the Charles

BOSTON, Mass. - The Dartmouth crew teams kicked off the 2012 fall slate at the 48th Annual Head of the Charles on Saturday and Sunday on the Charles River.

The Big Green heavyweight club four got the racing started in the club four race on Saturday (Oct. 21) afternoon. The Dartmouth quad placed seventh in the 55-boat race with a time of 17:23.30, just 34:13 seconds off of the winner from Union Boat Club out of Boston. The Dartmouth crew beat entries from Cornell, Holy Cross, and Harvard, and were just three seconds from medaling. 

The heavyweight eight, which raced on Sunday (Oct. 20), took 20th with a time of 15:26.99 finishing in the top 20 for the second consecutive season. The Big Green finished seventh of the Ivy League competitors. The Harvard eight took first with a time of 14:42.35. The Big Green crew defeted teams from Columbia, Brown, Harvard, George Washington, MIT, and Syracuse, as well as the US National Team, which finished last because of a penalty. 

In the women's competition, the Big Green who boated just a single eight, took 21st with a time of 17:41.87. Dartmouth was the eight boat from the Ancient Eight to cross the finish line. The Virginia boat, the 2012 NCAA Champions, took the title with a time of 16:13.48.

The lightweight boats closed out the competition. The lightweight four took fifth place with a time of 17:54.75 and was the second Ivy League crew to cross the finish line. Yale's A crew took top honors with a time of 16:55.26.

The lightweight eight closed out the competition and took 18th place with a time of 16:40.02. In a tight race, the Ivy League dominated as the top six teams were from the Ancient Eight.  Harvard, the top lightweight team in the nation for the last several years, took the top collegiate spot with a time of 16:38.15.

The Dartmouth crew teams get back on the water, Oct. 28 at the Princeton Chase hosted by Princeton.
