Dartmouth Falls to Clarkson in First Game of Road Trip
Despite a dominant first period in which the 19th-ranked Big Green outshot the Golden Knights, 10-3, the home team held a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes and never looked back.
With the win, Clarkson (9-15-4, 8-8-3) moves into a tie with Dartmouth (12-10-4, 8-8-3) in the ECAC Hockey standings with 19 points apiece. The loss means that the Green failed to win consecutive games once again, having not accomplished it since victories on Jan. 12 and 18 against Harvard and Brown.
After Mike Garlasco's goal 2:11 into the first period gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 advantage, both teams settled in and the Green seemingly took over. However, 5:43 into the middle period saw Jarrett Burton knock in a rebound at the side of the net that led to junior Cab Morris being pulled in favor of freshman James Kruger in the Dartmouth goal.
Making his collegiate debut, Kruger allowed a goal to Alex Boak just over four minutes into his first appearance on a screened shot from the top of the circles as the home team took a 3-0 lead midway through the game.
Kruger became more comfortable and eventually turned aside 12 shots in 33:11 of action, but an empty-net goal while killing a 6-on-4 power play with 1:16 left sealed the 4-0 win for Clarkson.
Morris stopped five shots in 25:43 of action and was saddled with the loss before giving way to Kruger between the pipes. At the other end, Greg Lewis made 28 saves in earning the win. Lewis stopped 44 shots in a 5-1 loss in Hanover in late January in the first meeting between the two teams.
The visitors were 0-for-5 on the power play, while Clarkson was 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
The Big Green fall to 2-7-3 in road games this season, while boasting a 10-3 mark at Thompson Arena. It was the second time shutout this season for the Green after falling 3-0 at Rensselaer on Feb. 2.
Dartmouth will return to action down the road Saturday night as they take on St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena at 7 p.m.
