Mike Keenan Named Semifinalist For 61st Walter Brown Award

BOSTON - Dartmouth men's hockey senior captain Mike Keenan has been named a semifinalist for the 61st Walter Brown Award, the Greater Gridiron Club of Boston announced Tuesday morning.

The award is presented annually to the top American-born collegiate hockey player in New England.

This is the second straight year that Keenan, a native of South Weymouth, Mass., has been tabbed as a semifinalist for the accolade. He is one of just 16 Division I players up for the award in 2012-13 that includes just three other defensemen.

A stalwart on the Big Green blueline, Keenan has posted two goals and nine assists, matching his career high of 11 points through just 22 games this season.

Playing in his final campaign in a Dartmouth uniform, Keenan is only the fifth player in the program's 107-year history to be tabbed as the team captain twice in his career. This season has seen the Big Green silence preseason predictions to appear in the top-10 of both national polls for the first time in school history.

The nation's oldest nationally recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, that year; the team defeated Canada, 2-1, in overtime in the championship game.

ECAC Hockey features seven players on the list, while Hockey East leads the way with eight. Bentley's Brent Gensler, the 2011-12 recipient of the Walter Brown Award, is Atlantic Hockey's lone representative.

Keenan and the rest of his Dartmouth teammates will be back in action on Saturday night against Harvard in Cambridge at 7 p.m.  Freshman Jimmy Vessey is also a semifinalist for the award representing the Crimson.
