Tyler Sikura '15 will attend the Winnipeg Jets Development Camp for a week as an undrafted invitee, updating fans on his experience during that time with a daily blog on DartmouthSports.com

Day 4: July 17, 2013

Today was more of a mental grind than a physical one. Everyone was pretty gassed and sore after the first couple days of camp so today was more about individual skills and mental sharpness when your body is fatigued.

Our on-ice session consisted mostly of deking through pylons, making sharp passes and shooting in stride. Today was a special day because my crazy parents flew out this morning in time to catch the 9 a.m. practice and they are staying for the rest of my time here. It’s unbelievable having the support from them, but not at all surprising anymore seeing as they make the majority of my games throughout the year despite Dartmouth being nine hours away by car.

I was mic’d up for morning practice, with a camera on me as well. Once they sync the audio with the video and edit out a few words I yelled there will be a short feature clip on the Jets website which I’m looking forward to seeing.

After the skate we did another team-bonding exercise, where we had to navigate our blindfolded partner through an obstacle course without being able to touch them or them being able to talk. The Big Green did something similar at the start of our 2012-2013, and there are a lot of things that we took away from such a simple exercise such as trusting your teammates. Lunch followed soon after and then a leg workout and competition bike sprints back at the MTS Centre. We then received a lecture from the mental skills coach about mental toughness and certain strategies that we could use in order to make the jump to the next level. “Future Tyler” is definitely going to thank “Past Tyler” for bearing the 40° F (that’s 4.4 C, I did the conversion) ice bath and stretch that followed and ended my day at the rink.

Finally, we put on our finest outfits and grabbed dinner at the Shark Club, which is also owned by the Jets’ ownership group, True North Sports and Entertainment.
