Day 3: July 16, 2013

Another long day is now in the books. At this point of week everyone is starting to loosen up and feel more comfortable and I’ve become friends with a lot of the guys I’ve met so far, which is nice. It’s crazy how small the hockey world is. I could spark up a conversation with any guy here, throw a couple names back and forth and we will always find a mutual friend.

Our Tuesday kicked off with breakfast at the hotel followed by a nutrition lecture at the arena. After the lecture, we laced up the skates and had an hour-and-fifteen-minute skate in front of another packed crowd. The tempo of the skate was as fast as I’ve ever been a part of, and the compete level of each guy really brings out the best in you.

Today’s practice implemented more game-like situations, like angling and battle drills. I prefer these types of drills because they allow you to use your hockey sense. Following the skate we grabbed lunch upstairs and bussed back to the MTS Centre for a team building exercise and workout. My group did the team building first, where we all stood on a long board with ropes attached to them around an obstacle course as quickly as possible. An off-ice workout began directly after, where we were put through both a weight circuit and tough bike program. I don’t know how the Tour De France guys do it every day!

Dinner was held at DeLuca’s where we were able to participate in the preparation of our food. Some guys that volunteered should definitely stick to hockey and not take up any culinary courses. We arrived back at the hotel around 9 p.m. and my roommate, third-round selection J.C. Lipon, and I are heading to bed sometime soon.
