Winnipeg Jets Development Camp With Tyler Sikura: Day 2
Tyler Sikura '15 will attend the Winnipeg Jets Development Camp for a week as an undrafted invitee, updating fans on his experience during that time with a daily blog on DartmouthSports.com
Day 2: July 15
I’m not exactly sure whether it’s the anticipation or the nerves, but fitness testing always seems to be the part of the week that guys dread most. Bright and early this morning we underwent various forms of physical testing including, but not limited to, the V02 max (terrible), Wingate bike test, bench press and lateral agility. We also received a full physical examination, concussion testing, EKG heart testing and dental checkups. Once we had finished all of our tests, we grabbed a bite to eat at the rink and hopped on the bus to the MTS Iceplex, the Jets practice arena, to take to the ice for the first time.
Winnipeg is hockey crazed. There were about 1,000 people there watching practice and a lineup of kids waiting for autographs as we left the ice. The skate was only 45 minutes long and consisted mostly of flow drills to get our legs back under us and break in our new gear. Included in my on-ice group were three first-round picks, namely Mark Scheifele, Jacob Trouba and 2013 selection Josh Morrisey. Evander Kane was also on the ice skating in some of the drills and helping out the coaching staff. The level of competition was high, but I felt comfortable and confident out there.
After the skate we received some media training about some “do’s” and “don’ts” (Tyler Seguin) on social media and received some coaching on how to conduct ourselves during media scrums. Dinner was the last part of our day, and we’re finally back at the hotel for some wind down time watching “How I Met Your Mother.”
