ALBANY, N.Y. - ECAC Hockey announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) to once again return the league's championship weekend to Lake Placid for the 2013-14 season. The agreement is set for three seasons beginning in March of 2014.
The ECAC Hockey Semifinals
and Championship Game will take place at The 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena,
marking the fifth different venue to host the league's final weekend of play in
league history. It joins Boston Arena (1962-66), Boston Garden (1967-92),
Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, (1993-02), Pepsi Arena/Times Union Center in
Albany (2003-10) and Boardwalk Hall (2011-2013) in Atlantic City as a host site
for the final three games of the conference championship tournament.
"We are thrilled to partner with ORDA for our men's championship beginning in March 2014," ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell said. "Lake Placid has always been one of the special hockey places in the US. The combination of the warm welcome from the surrounding community, aura of the venue and general support will be easily absorbed by fans and students alike. The location serves as a prime choice for enhancing the overall student-athlete experience."
The 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena, one of three ice surfaces at the Olympic Center, is a 8,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Lake Placid. This surface, along with the USA Rink was built for the 1980 Winter Olympics.
A venue that ranks as one of the most historic buildings in all of sports, The 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena played host to perhaps the most famous athletic competition ever played, the "Miracle on Ice" game between the Soviet Union and the United States on February 22, 1980. The US would defeat the Soviets that afternoon, 4-3, as part of the team's improbable run to a gold medal on American soil.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of that historic game, the building was renamed in honor of the head coach that led the team to the top of the podium, Herb Brooks.
The arena has also been a part of several college hockey moments, playing host to the Frozen Four in 1970, 1984 and 1988 as well as the Women's Frozen Four in 2007.
The 2013 ECAC Hockey Championship will be held in Atlantic City, N.J., at Boardwalk Hall for the third straight season.
