The 2011 Fall season started with a busy weekend of play. Two players contributed to the excitement and earned Athlete of the Week honors. Senior captain Kelly Hood set a new Dartmouth record for the field hockey team, while senior captain Lucky Mkosana earned MVP and All-Tournament honors for the men's soccer Classic.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
(Berlin, N.H.), Field Hockey, Senior, Midfield
Senior captain Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) started the 2011 season right where she left off last fall. Last week against Maine, Hood broke the program record for goals with the 47th of her career. She followed that with another tally against UNH on Sunday while also adding an assist in the contest. Those three points against the Wildcats now have Hood tied for the program's all-time lead in career points with 113. Hood has scored in each game this season and is on pace to break her own school record for goals in a single season, set last year with 18. One of the top players in the Ivy League, Hood currently leads the conference in almost every offensive statistical category in the conference thus far in 2011.
(Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), Men's Soccer, Forward
Lucky Mkosana continued his impressive career at Dartmouth with an outstanding performance at the 2011 Dartmouth Classic last weekend. The Bulawayo, Zimbabwe native, was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player for his two goals and an assist in a Dartmouth win over South Carolina and a double overtime tie with No. 11 South Florida. Mkosana was named Ivy League men's soccer Player of the Week for his efforts throughout the tournament. The senior captain is among the Ivy League's offensive leaders and is No. 5 on Dartmouth's all-time scoring list with 26 career goals.
