Gaide, Franklin Named Cross High-Performance Athletes of the Week
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Dartmouth's Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Soccer senior Aaron Gaide and equestrian sophomore Abby Franklin stood out among a host of top performances within their teams, earning Cross High-Performance Athletes of the Week distinction. Gaide scored a goal in each game - the first of his career - to lead Dartmouth to wins over Vermont and Yale while Franklin won her event at the Big Green's first two competitions of the year.
Dartmouth Male Athlete of the Week:
Aaron Gaide (Avon, Conn.), Men's Soccer, Senior, Midfield
While men's soccer had a spread offensive attack with a 3-2 win at Vermont and 3-1
win over Yale, Aaron Gaide went above and beyond to lead his team. At Vermont,
Gaide scored the game-tying goal after the Catamounts had taken an early 1-0
lead in wet and muddy conditions. Though he has been a significant contributor
since his freshman year, it was the first goal of his career. Three days later,
Gaide led the Big Green to a critical Ivy win over Yale, scoring the
game-winning goal off a cross from Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe). Gaide's
goal was critical as Yale had matched an early Dartmouth score and he put his
team on top for good.
Dartmouth Female Athlete of the Week:
Abby Franklin (Wilmont, N.H.), Equestrian, Sophomore, Adv. Walk/Trot/Canter
Abby Franklin and the Dartmouth equestrian team began its
season last weekend with shows at UVM and Middlebury. The Big Green drew some
tough horse draws against the Cats on Saturday and finished 5th but on Sunday,
Dartmouth fared much better, placing 2nd at Middlebury. Franklin was first in
both her events on the weekend as she finished tops in advanced
walk/trot/canter.
