HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth equestrian team opened the 2011-12 year with two shows this weekend in Vermont. The Big Green were represented at Middlebury on Saturday and Vermont on Sunday.
In the first show of the weekend, Dartmouth placed third out of 10 teams at Middlebury. Sophomore Janna Wandzilak (Waxhaw, N.C.) placed first in Intermediate Fences, while freshman Maya Johnson (Kenai, Alaska) also took the top spot in Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter.
Freshman Olivia Cameron (Wilmont, N.H.) was second in Open Fences on Saturday. Also earning second-place performances were senior Natalie Colaneri (Jericho, N.Y.) and junior Gaby Sauza (Atlanta, Ga.), both in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter.
The Big Green then headed to the University of Vermont for its competition Sunday afternoon, where the team placed fifth in a field of 10 teams.
Senior Cristina Herren (Chicago, Ill.) took first place in Open Fences with Wandzilak claiming her second first-place showing of the weekend in Intermediate Fences.
For her efforts over the two days, Wandzilak qualified for a spot at Regionals in Intermediate Fences.
Sauza will also be headed to Regionals after qualifying in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter.
Cameron and junior Abby Franklin (Wilmont, N.H.) both finished second in their respective events. Franklin was second in Novice Flat at Vermont, while Cameron was second in Open Flat.
The team will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Dartmouth Show, set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Dartmouth Riding Center.
