HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team surrendered a trio of first period goals and couldn't rally, falling 3-1 against No. 7/6 Clarkson on Friday night at Thompson Arena in ECAC Hockey action.
The loss snaps an eight-game home unbeaten streak for the Big Green, while the Golden Knights completed the season sweep with the victory.
The Green and White fall to 15-8-5 overall and 10-7-4 in league contests. The struggles against the North Country rivals continued for the team from the Upper Valley as they have now lost three of the last four to the Green and Gold.
The game began with a feverish pace as Clarkson's Olivia Howe opened the scoring just over two minutes into the opening period. Jamie Lee Rattray added to the Golden Knights lead later in the first tallying her team-best 18th marker of the season on the power play.
90 seconds later freshman Laura Stacey cut the Clarkson lead in half scoring her seventh goal on the season for the Big Green. The man-advantage tally for Stacey was the second of her career.
Dartmouth had their chances throughout the period, but Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe proved why she has been a five-time recipient of ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week honors in 2012-13.
With a two man-advantage the Big Green had two point blank chances that Howe turned aside, gloving a Sasha Nanji shot from the point and stopping a backhand off the stick of Stacey.
Late in the period, Carly Mercer gave the Golden Knights some breathing room, scoring her 15th goal of the year to stretch the Clarkson lead to 3-1.
After the four goal first the two teams settled in and played back and forth throughout the remainder of the contest.
The best scoring chance in the second for Dartmouth came when Karlee Odland and Lindsey Allen came in on a two-on-one break. Allen slid the puck nicely over to Odland who fired at an open net, but Howe dove across crease to preserve the two-goal advantage for Clarkson.
The special-teams unit went one-for-seven with the man-advantage. In two games this season against the Golden Knights the Big Green are a combined one-for-17 on the power play.
Dartmouth wraps up the 2012-13 regular season tomorrow, Feb. 23 as they host St. Lawrence. Puck-drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. After the contest the team will honor the class of 2013.
