BOSTON, Mass. – The Dartmouth women’s hockey team twice battled back from one-goal deficits on Saturday afternoon before falling, 3-2, to No. 8 Boston University inside Walter A. Brown Arena.
Sarah Lefort netted her team-best 11th goal of the season at 8:18 of the second period for the Terriers (15-3-1) to give the home team a one-goal edge over the Big Green (3-12-0). In the third period, both teams were scoreless as Dartmouth outshot BU, 8-7.
The contest was the fourth straight against Hockey East foes for the team from the Upper Valley and it also marked the final non-conference game of the season for the Green.
Freshman Robyn Chemago played well in net in a losing effort for Dartmouth. The first-year netminder made 28 saves, including the final 12 shots she faced. On the opposite end, Kerrin Sperry helped Boston University earn its third win all-time versus Dartmouth, stopping 28 shots.
The Terriers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead three minutes into play as Rebecca Russo found the back of the net. Just over two minutes later, Dartmouth tied the game at one as Karlee Odland potted her third tally of the season. Odland’s marker was the first unassisted goal for the Big Green in the last eight games.
Late in the first stanza Boston University stole back the momentum as Maddie Elia scored. Elia’s goal was her fifth of the season with Russo and Sarah Steele picking up assists.
Dartmouth fought back to tie the game at two five and a half minutes into the second period. For the second straight game, freshman Kennedy Ottenbreit scored for the Big Green. Ottenbreit’s tally was her first career game-tying goal with Morgan Illikainen earning the primary assist. Illikainen now leads the team with five helpers this season.
Down the stretch, Dartmouth’s late rally was thwarted by the BU defense and Sperry. Over the final 90 seconds of play, the Big Green fired the final 11 shots, however only four of which made it to goal. Sperry stood her ground and kept the puck out of the net as Boston University held on for the victory.
Dartmouth returns to the ice next weekend, Jan. 10-11, welcoming ECAC Hockey and Ivy League rivals Yale and Brown into Hanover. The tilt with the Bulldogs is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. and the contest with the Bears gets underway Saturday at 4 p.m.
