A native of Sun Valley, Idaho and a member of the renowned Patterson skiing family, Ruff enters his 24th year at Dartmouth. He was a ten-year veteran of the U.S. Ski Team staff, coaching numerous World Cup and World Championship teams, and was a coach at three Olympic Winter Games (1980 in Lake Placid, NY; 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia; 1988 in Calgary, Canada). Ruff graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor’s degree distributed in molecular biology, chemistry and psychology. In 1989 he was named Director of Skiing, a position he held until 2005. He is a four-time recipient of the EISA Coach of the Year Award and recipient of the Ski New Hampshire Al Merrill Award. Dartmouth highlights include winning the 2007 NCAA Team Championship title, Glenn Randall '09 winning the 2008 NCAA Freestyle title and Sam Tarling ‘13 winning the 2010 NCAA Freestyle title.
