HENLEY-ON-THAMES, OXFORDSHIRE - The Dartmouth men's lightweight rowing varsity eight opened action at the 2012 Royal Henley Regatta on Wednesday (June 27). The Big Green took on a junior varsity heavyweight squad from Brown to open action.

In the first round of knockout racing, the Big Green dropped their race to Ivy League foe, Brown. The race was tightly contested through the first 500 meters with the Bears taking just under a second and a half lead at the first marker.

"The crew raced hard, had no break in form, nothing left undone," said head coach Dan Roock. "We simply ran up against a superior foe. Bad luck of the draw for opponent and for lane, but Brown would have bested us regardless of our station. They were big, strong, fit, and rowed well."

Brown started to make moves and extended their lead at the 1000-meter mark pulling ahead nearly a length at the final marker before the finish line. The Bears took the race by 6.57 seconds, two and a half lengths ahead of the Big Green crew.

The Bears will advance to the next round of racing with their win over the Big Green.

"The crew is disappointed, but are taking the defeat together, and reflecting back on the good run they had to get here, and the improvements they made over the past couple of weeks of extra training they would not of had otherwise."

Dartmouth made its third appearance at the Royal Henley Regatta since the 2003 season. The Big Green reached the quarterfinals in each of its last two outings.
