Lightweight Crew Races Well Against Harvard, MIT
BOSTON, Mass. - The Dartmouth men's lightweight crew team battled No. 1-ranked Harvard to the wire but the Crimson edged the Big Green by a length in the varsity eight race to claim the Biglin Bowl on Saturday (April 14).
The day produced mixed results for the Big Green, but head coach Dan Roock, was pleased with the effort from the Dartmouth crews.
"It was a day of mixed results for us but overall with this just being our second week of racing, I'm pleased," said Roock. "The varsity eight raced a very good Harvard crew but we were right there with them, so I think I'm as pleased as I can be without having won the race."
The Crimson edged the Big Green by just a length in the first varsity eight race and the Dartmouth crew battled with the Harvard crew down the entire length of the course. Harvard crossed the finish line with a time of 6:12.4, while Dartmouth was in second place with a time of 6:16.6. MIT was third with a time of 6:48.7.
Despite dropping the first varsity eight race, the Big Green did rebound and win the second varsity eight and the varsity four races.
In the second varsity eight race, Dartmouth crossed the finish line with a time of 6:34.7, seven seconds ahead of Harvard's crew that took second with a time of 6:41.1.
The varsity four race was tight throughout with the Big Green taking first place with a time of 7:30.0, just ahead of Harvard's B boat that finished with a time of 7:32.9. Harvard's A boat took third with a time of 7:36.4 and MIT took fourth with a time of 7:43.2.
Harvard claimed both the freshmen races. In the first freshmen eight, Dartmouth seemed to be keeping pace with an aggressive start but somewhere in the middle of the race, couldn't keep up their speed, taking third place with a time of 6:40.3. The second freshmen eight took second place with a time of 6:46.2.
Dartmouth is next in action on April 21 and 22 on the Connecticut River in Hanover, N.H. On Saturday the Big Green will take on Yale for the Durand Cup and on Saturday the Subin Cup will be on the line when Columbia come to Hanover.
