Big Green Tidbits
On The Road Again – All three Big Green crew teams will hit the road this weekend. There are just two home meets this season as the lightweight team battled Harvard and MIT for the Biglin Bowl on the Connecticut River last weekend and the heavyweights will host Brown next weekend. The women have had at least one home race each of the last four seasons. The last time they didn’t have a home spring race was in 2009.
Cup Season In Full Swing – Last weekend marked the beginning of Cup season for the Big Green crews. The lightweight team battled Harvard and MIT for the Biglin Bowl while the heavyweight men traveled to Yale to battle for the Olympic Axe. The women raced Boston University and Yale for the Class of 1985 Cup. Last season, the lightweight men won all of their cup races, except for the Biglin Bowl. The Big Green women claimed the Class of 1985 Cup with a dramatic race with Yale. This weekend the heavyweights will race for the Bill Cup and the women will battle for the O’Leary Cup. The lightweights will go for the Durand Cup and Subin Cups.
Lightweights To Compete Twice This Weekend – Much like the women’s squad in the first weekend of the spring slate, the lightweight men’s team will race twice this weekend. The squad opens against Yale down in Connecticut before closing the weekend at Columbia where they will face the Lions and Georgetown. Both races are cup races. Traditionally, the Big Green always race Yale and Columbia over the same weekend.
Dartmouth Women Receiving Votes in CRCA Poll – The Big Green women’s squad is receiving votes in this week’s edition of the CRCA/USARowing Coaches Poll. The Big Green have seven votes in the weekly poll. The Ivy League is well represented as Princeton has a No. 7 ranking this week to lead the Ancient Eight schools. Harvard (8), Brown (10), Yale (11), Columbia (16) and Cornell (19) are also ranked this week.
Big Green Men Getting Votes Too! – The men’s heavyweight team first varsity eight is also ranked this week. The heavyweights top boat moved up to the No. 14 spot, after coming in at No. 17 the week before. Harvard leads the Ivy League contingent and is ranked No. 2. The men’s lightweight rankings are also out and the Big Green check in at No. 5, up a spot from last week. The Ivy League is well represented on the lightweight side, owning the top seven spots in the poll, with the Crimson checking in at No. 1.
Women’s Crew and Heavyweight Men Will Travel to Windermere Cup – The Big Green men’s heavyweight team and the women’s squad will make the trek to Seattle for the 27th Annual Windermere Cup on May 4. The annual event signals the opening day for boaters in Seattle. Ivy League foe, Cornell will also compete in the prestigious race.
Welcome to the Team! – Among the three rowing squads, the Big Green will be welcoming a total of 49 freshmen to Hanover this season. The lightweight crew team adds 20 new members while the heavyweights will add 15 and the women will welcome 14. Welcome to Dartmouth and Hanover!
Healey Takes Over Lightweight Program – The Big Green welcomed Sean Healy to the lightweight crew family last summer, when he was named head coach, taking over for Dan Roock. Healy spent the previous six seasons as the freshman lightweight coach at his alma mater, Cornell.
Bordeau’s Return to Coach Heavyweights and Women’s Squads – Wendy Bordeau and Topher Bordeau return to coach the women and men’s heavyweight squads. Wendy is entering her ninth season as head coach and is assisted by former Dartmouth rower, Anne Kennedy. Topher Bordeau is entering his eighth season at Dartmouth and is assisted by former Dartmouth rower, Andy Hilton, who is in his third season.
