Perhaps the Olympics are in her future but for now Lizzie Kistler is leading the Big Green ski team at home this winter along with Will Geoghegan on the indoor track. Kistler placed in the top 10 in three races last weekend. Geoghegan set a Dartmouth and an Ivy League record in the mile, clocking a 3:58.04 for the fastest collegiate time this winter.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
(Santa Rosa, Calif.) So, Alpine Skiing
Lizzie Kistler placed in the top 10 in three races during the weekend of Jan. 24-26, claiming a spot on the podium twice and winning the slalom at the rescheduled Vermont Carnival at Burke Mountain on Sunday. Not only did the sophomore from Santa Rosa, Calif., win the event, she beat the competition by more than a full second. Her victory lifted the Dartmouth women's alpine team to victory in the slalom over host Vermont by four points. An All-American in the slalom as a freshman, Kistler is coming on strong in the giant slalom as well, finishing third in the opening race on Jan. 10 and seventh this past weekend at UNH.
(Brunswick, Maine), Sr., Men's Track
Geoghegan ran a 3:58.04 mile Saturday at Boston University's Terrier Invitational, breaking the Dartmouth and Ivy League record in the event. Beating his previous career best by nearly seven seconds, Geoghegan became the first collegiate runner this season to break the four-minute mark. The performance set a new Ivy League mark, eclipsing the previous record of 3:58.52 set by Columbia’s Kyle Merber in 2010, while also besting the old Dartmouth record of 4:02.26 set by Sam Wilbur in 1994 by more than four seconds. The only other Dartmouth student-athlete to break the four-minute mile in program history was Ben True, who has a 3:59.99 to his credit during the outdoor season.
