Spring Practice Begins Today for Football
HANOVER, N.H. — Coming off a 2012 season in which Dartmouth recorded a 6-4 overall mark and finished tied for third in the Ivy League at 4-3, the Big Green football team will be back on the gridiron this afternoon for the first of 12 spring practices at Memorial Field.
Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach Buddy Teevens has quite a bit of talent back following a solid fall season, including a pair of quarterbacks that will battle it out for the starting job in rising junior Alex Park and rising sophomore Dalyn Williams. Park started the first seven games and completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 1,370 yards and seven touchdowns while throwing six interceptions.
Williams, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, saw action in every game, starting the final three behind center, and completed 73-of-114 passes (64.0 pct.) for 974 yards with seven scores and nary a pick. He also finished the season second on the team in rushing with 262 yards and three touchdowns on 89 carries.
Also returning for the offense for one more season is running back Dominick Pierre, an All-Ivy Second-Team selection last fall. The native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., racked up 830 yards at a 5.0 average per carry while scoring nine touchdowns in nine games. Pierre ranks 12th all-time at Dartmouth with 1,574 career rushing yards and needs just 426 more to become the third Big Green player with 2,000.
The receiving corps has a talented group back as well, even with the graduation of Michael Reilly (44 catches, 682 yards, 6 TD). Ryan McManus nearly matched Reilly's totals with 42 receptions for 664 yards and a pair of scores, while Robbie Anthony, Victor Williams and Bo Patterson (playing baseball this spring) will make for solid targets for the Dartmouth quarterbacks.
On defense, the Big Green will be anchored by a pair of senior linebackers in Bronson Green and Michael Runger, the latter of whom led the Ivy League with 98 tackles last year. Free safety Garrett Waggoner will also be back after earning first-team All-Ivy honors last year. In all, seven starters return for the defensive unit.
Practices will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:45 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 9:45 a.m. (tentatively as weather permits). The annual Green-White scrimmage will conclude the spring season on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m.
