Pierre, Schoenthaler Named to 2013 CFPA Watch LIsts
HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth senior Dominick Pierre and junior Kirby Schoenthaler have been named to the watch lists for their respective positions by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). Pierre’s selection was revealed in May for the FCS Running Back Award, while Schoenthaler was included over the weekend for the FCS Kickoff Returner Award.
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
A 5-11, 215-pound native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Pierre was a second-team All-Ivy pick last season after rushing for 830 yards in nine games (92.2-yard average), gaining exactly five yards per carry while scoring nine touchdowns. Three times he amassed at least 100 yards on the ground in a game and topped 90 on two other occasions. One of the three Big Green captains this season, Pierre was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week to start the 2012 campaign after running for a career-high 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 26 carries in a 35-7 win over Butler. The bruising back also scored twice in league contests against Cornell (154 yards) and Brown (136). Pierre needs just 426 more yards to become just the third Dartmouth player to run for 2,000 yards in a career.
A year after leading the Big Green with 25 receptions as a freshman, the 6-0, 195-pound Schoenthaler made more of a name for himself returning kickoffs as a sophomore. The Bartlesville, Okla., native averaged over 20 yards per return on 18 kickoffs, including a 79-yard sprint to the end zone against Sacred Heart that was one of just three brought back by an Ivy Leaguer all season.
The Big Green are no strangers to the CFPA FCS Awards as Shawn Abuhoff ’12 earned the 2010 Punt Returner Award after bringing back three punts for touchdowns and ranking third nationally with a 17.2-yard average.
Dartmouth will begin the 2013 season on the road at Butler on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. The quest to add to the Big Green’s league-record 17 Ivy League titles will start on the road as well when the squad opens the conference slate at Penn, the defending champion, on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
