Zupan Wins 400 IM on Second Day at Ivy Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. -  Sophomore Nejc Zupan (Kamnik, Slovenia) picked up the first title for Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team at the 2012 Ivy League Championships in the 400 IM with a school record time of 3:49.17 as the Big Green moved into fifth place with 506.5 points in second- day action on Friday (March 2).

Princeton leads with 1049.5 points over Harvard who is in second place with 944 points. Columbia is sitting in third with 715.5 while Yale is in fourth with 678.5 points. Penn is behind Dartmouth with 479 points while Brown with 420.5 points and Cornell with 377.5 round out the competition.

Zupan claimed his third overall Ivy League title and first this year in the 400 IM. His time of 3:49.73 is eight seconds faster then the previous record of 3:57.64, set in 2010 by teammate Albert Roth (Aurora, Ill.). Zupan's time is also an NCAA consideration time.

The evening session started off with a bang as the 200 medley relay quartet of Roth, Zupan, Will Derdeyn (St. Louis, Mo.) and Zach Doherty (Pelham, N.Y.) set a new school record in with a time of 1:30.82. The previous record stood since 2004.

In the distance events, Dylan Gabel (Alta Loma, Calif.) showcased his skills, swimming a lifetime best of 9:13.65, good enough for a seventh-place finish and 23 points towards the Dartmouth team score.

The Big Green swimmers in the 100 butterfly all had great swims. Ray Li (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) lead the Dartmouth contingent and took 11th place with a time of 48.75, one tenth of a second behind Yale's Gosku Bicer who took 10th place.  Andrew North (Omaha, Neb.) and Derdeyn also placed in the top 24. Derdeyn was 14th, touching with a time of 48.96 and North was 23rd with a time of 50.14. 

Jay Margherio (New Canaan, Conn.) swam a lifetime best in the 200 free in the morning preliminaries with a time of 1:39.07. He swam a 1:39.65 in the final for a 14th-place finish to led the Dartmouth swimmers.

Senior co-captain Matt Stumpf (Palm Harbor, Fla.) took a top 10 finish in the 10 breaststroke with a lifetime best of 56.24, good for 10th place while freshman Konrad von Moltke (Kenilworth, Ill.) took 16th place with a time of 57.19 at his first Ivy League Championship.

Fresh off the school record in the 100 back in the 400 medley relay last night, senior Michael Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) took 10th in the 100 back final with a time of 49.49, fending off Cornell's Jake Sangen who finished just behind him in 11th place.

Dartmouth picked up its third school record of the night in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:41.33, also an NCAA consideration time. Senior John Hill (Erie, Pa.) teamed with Margherio , Gabel and freshman Ian Woon (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) to break the previous record set back in 2004.

Action at the 2012 Ivy League Championship closes tomorrow (Saturday, March 3).  Final day action begins with the preliminaries at 11 a.m., with the finals set to start at 6 p.m.
