The Dartmouth College swimming and diving teams hit the road for the final Ivy League dual meet of the season, when they travel to New York, N.Y. to swim against Columbia. The meet kicks off at 11:00 a.m. with the women at Columbia's Uris Pool. The men's meet is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
BIG GREEN TIDBITS
Big Green Closes Non-Conference Slate - The Big Green closed out the non-conference slate with a dual meet against UConn on Sunday (Feb. 5). Despite dropping both meets, the Big Green swam very well. The women only lost by a 158-142 score and the men fell 172-128. Dartmouth has had a very good non-conference slate swimming against Bryant and UMass as well as UConn as a full squad. The Dartmouth women were very successful out of conference this season with dominant wins over Northeastern, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Big Green Women Swim Well against Northeastern and Rhode Island - The Dartmouth women's team swam its final meet without the Big Green men this season when they took on Northeastern and Rhode Island. Dartmouth closed in style with dominating wins over both Northeastern and Rhode Island and moves to 9-4 in dual meet action. It is the second consecutive season that the Big Green has reached nine dual meet wins.
Several Season-Bests Set at UConn - As the Big Green swimmers prepare for the upcoming Ivy League championships, several swimmers set new season-best against the Huskies. On the men's side senior John Hill (Erie, Pa.) set a new season-best in the 500 free with a time of 4:41.15 and in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.31. On the women's side, Charlotte Williams (Boca Raton, Fla.) swam a season-best in the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.79.
Serpico Pulls Double Duty Against Northeastern and Rhode Island - Junior diver Erica Serpico (Moorestown, N.J.) took event titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards against Northeastern and Rhode Island. Serpico claimed both titles for the third time this season.
Ivy League Championships on the Horizon - The Dartmouth men and women's swimming and diving programs are getting ready for the 2012 Ivy League Championships. Championship season begins Feb. 23-25 when the women's team heads to Cambridge, Mass., where Harvard will host the championships at Blodgett Pool. The men's championship will be held March 1-3 at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
Hitting the Road - The Big Green closed out the 2011-12 home slate with last weekend's Dartmouth Invitational and the dual meet against Princeton. Dartmouth had a good home slate with a sweep of Brown and women's wins over Penn and New Hampshire. The Big Green will close the season on the road with trips to Northeastern for the women, and combined trips to Connecticut and Columbia before the Ivy League Championships.
Dartmouth Divers Qualify for NCAA Zones - The Big Green divers are representing Dartmouth well and so far, six Big Green divers have qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet in March. Female divers Katy Feng (Westfield, Mass.), Madison McClenney (The Woodlands, Texas), Kendall MacRae (Sherborn, Mass.) and Erica Serpico (Moorestown, N.J.) have all earned a spot in the meet while freshmen Ryan Shelley (Sudbury, Mass.) and Ethan Canty (Sunnyvale, Calif.) have earned spots for the men. The group of four females is the largest group of divers to qualify in Hamilton's tenure at Dartmouth.
All-Around Effort For the Big Green - This season has been characterized by all-around solid performances on both the men and women's side. The teams have been bolstered by an impressive crop of underclassmen. Twins Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) and Christine Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) combined for four school records. Danielle owns the 200 fly and 400 IM records while Christine owns the 200 free record. Meredith Sweeney (Hinsdale, Ill.), Dartmouth's backstroke specialist, owns the 100 and 200 backstroke records while Kendall Farnham (Severna Park, Md.) owns the 100 fly record. Dartmouth's freshmen have also been impressive. Big Green freshmen Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.), Sasha Alcon (Fremont, Calif.) and Siobhan Hengemuhle (Boulder, Colo.) have each captured event titles on the women's side. On the men's side divers Ryan Shelley (Sudbury, Mass.) and Ethan Canty (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and swimmer Ian Woon (Highlands Ranch, Calif.) have also won event titles.
Scouting Columbia - The Columbia men enter Saturday's meet with a 6-2, 3-2 Ivy League record after dropping a 156-136 dual meet to Navy on Saturday (Feb. 4). The Lions will take on Princeton on Friday before hosting the Big Green on Saturday. Saturday's meet is the first home meet for the Lions since defeating Cornell on Jan. 21. On the women's side, the Lions have a 6-1, 4-1 Ivy League record after defeating Brown, 182-118, in their last meet on Jan. 28. The Lions have also defeated Yale, Penn and Cornell. Their lone loss is to Harvard although they will swim at defending champion, Princeton, on Friday (Feb. 10) before hosting Dartmouth.
Barry and Pinson Named Captains of the Women's Squad - Seniors Galen Barry (Wayne, Pa.) and Kelsey Pinson (Portland, Ore.) were named captains for the women's swimming and diving squad for the 2011-12 season.
Stumpf and Ahern Lead Dartmouth Men's Squad - Seniors Matt Stumpf (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Mickey Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) were named captains for the men's swimming and diving squads during the 2011-12 season.
Wilson Returns for 19th Season- Head Coach Jim Wilson is in his 19th season as head coach of the Dartmouth swimming and diving squads. Wilson, originally hired to coach the Dartmouth men, took over the women's team in 2006. Wilson also returns assistant coaches Jesup Szatkowski and Jenn Verser while Chris Hamilton returns as Dartmouth's diving coach.
