HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men and women's swimming and diving teams swam a solid all-around meet against Penn and Yale on Saturday (Jan. 14) at Karl Michael Pool.  The Dartmouth men dropped close meets to Yale (195.50-130.50) and Penn (157.50-142.50) while the women edged Penn, 150-149 and fell to Yale (174-126).

The Dartmouth women clinched the win over Penn in dramatic fashion. Needing to finish 2-3 or better in the 400 free relay to win, the Big Green did just that taking third and fourth place, ahead of the Quakers, with times of 3:30.12 and 3:34.20 to clinch the win over Penn.

The meet saw solid performance from both of the Big Green squads. Dartmouth won four event titles and was headlined by a sweep of the men and women's 1000 free.  Sophomore Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) won the event with a time of 10/13.89 while sophomore Dylan Gabel (Alta Loma, Calif.) on the men's side also won the event with a time of 9:31.79.

Kerr's win in the 1000 free was her third win in the event this season as she also won the event against Brown and Cornell, while Gabel claimed the event title for the first time this season.

Men's senior co-captain Michael Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) took the 100 backstroke title with a time of 51.4, just edging out Yale's Michael Lazris, who took second place with a time of 51.68.

Freshman Siobhan Hengemuhle (Boulder, Colorado) continued her stellar freshman campaign with a win in the 50 free. She touched the wall with a time of 24.53 and was joined in the top three by classmate Sasha Alcon (Fremont, Calif.) who took third with a time of 24.82.

Sophomore Meredith Sweeney (Hinsdale, Ill.) took runner-up honors in the 200 back (2:06.96) while freshman Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.) was second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.33.

Several Karl Michael Pool records were set as well. On the men's side, new records were set in the 100 and 200 breast by Brendan McHugh of Penn and in the 200 fly and 200 IM by Alwin Firmansyah of Yale while teammate Robby Harder set a new record in the 200 back.  On the women's side, Alex Forrester set a new record in the 100 free and the women's' 400 free relay also set a new record.

The Dartmouth women's squad is back in the water on Sunday (Jan. 15) when it travels to take on twin state rival, Vermont. The dual meet starts at 3 p.m. at Vermont's Forbush Natatorium. Both squads are back in action Jan. 27-28 for the second annual Dartmouth Invitational at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River, Vt.
