PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Dartmouth men' s swimming and diving squads opened up action at the 2013 Ivy League Championships on Thursday (March 7). Junior Nejc Zupan (Kamnik, Slovenia) led the way winning the 200 IM with an Ivy League meet record time to pace the Big Green swimmers. Dartmouth is sitting in fifth place after first day action with 219 points.

Harvard is leading the meet with 467 points while Princeton (423), Columbia (201) and Yale (295) round out the top five.

Zupan picked up his fourth Ivy League title winning the 200 IM with a time of 1:43.94. His time earned him an NCAA B consideration time and is a new Dartmouth school record -- the sixth individual record of his career. Aaron Athanas (Beverley, Mass.) and Joseph Chance (Lafayette, La.) also swam finishing in 19th and 23rd place, respectively.

Freshman Jun Oh (Andover, Mass.) continued his success in the mid-distance and long distance freestyle events by winning the B Final In the 500 free. The rookie set a new school record with a time of 4:24.45, besting the previous record set by teammate Dylan Gabel (Alta Loma, Calif.), by over three seconds. Gabel finished 13th with a time of 4:38.50, while Logan Briggs (Issaquah, Wash.) was 20th.

In the sprint 50 free, Will Derdeyn (St. Louis, Mo.) led the way. After swimming a 20.48 in the morning prelims, he cranked it up a notch and tied his own school record in the event, swimming a 20.21, earning him 10th place. Zack Doherty (Pelham, N.Y.) took 13th after touching the wall with a time of 20.33.

Freshman Brett Gillis (Kitchner, Ontario, Canada) led the Dartmouth divers and took fourth with a score of 331.25. Ryan Shelley (Sudbury, Mass) was 13th with a score do 278 and Ben Weill (Woodbridge, Con.) was 16th.

To close the session the Big Green went all out in the 400-medley relay, turning in a second-place performance. The quartet of James Verhagen (Randberg, South Africa), Zupan, Derdeyn, and Doherty swam a 3:12.32, smashing the previous record of 3:16.15 set by the same group at the Brown Invitational.  Their time was also an NCAA B consideration time and was just .14 off of Harvard, who won the event.

In the morning preliminary swims, Gabel and Oh led the long distance contingent. Gabel swam a 4:27.50 for 10th place while Oh was right behind him in 11th place with a time of 4:27.55. Both qualified for the B Final.

Zupan took second place in the 200 IM swimming a 1:46.45, a new Dartmouth school record and just .09 seconds off Princeton's Teo D'Alessandro who won the prelim with a time of 1:46.36. Athanas swam a 1:50.65 and also qualified for the evening finals.

Derdeyn swam a 20.38 in the 50 free, good for a 12th place finish while teammate Doherty placed 13th with a 20.44. Both qualified for the B Final.
