Menís Crew Teams Selected to 2013 IRA National Championships
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men’s heavyweight and lightweight crew teams were both selected to participate in the 2013 IRA National Championship it was announced on Tuesday (May 21). The national championship will take place May 31-June 2 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
The Dartmouth heavyweights will be making their 15th consecutive appearance at the IRA National Championships. Dartmouth's best finish at the IRAs was during the 1992 season when they placed in a three-way tie for first. The Big Green earned an at-large selection into the championship by virtue of its finish at the EARC sprints last weekend.
Dartmouth is joined at the national championship by each of the other Ancient Eight schools and will boat a varsity eight, second varsity eight and freshman eight. The Big Green will also send an open four.
The lightweight crew, coming off a third-place finish in the first varsity eight at Eastern Sprints last weekend, will be making its fourth consecutive appearance in the national championship. Dartmouth earned runner-up honors last season in a close race with Harvard. The Big Green's best finish at IRA's is a second-place finish in both the 1990 and 1994 seasons. Dartmouth has placed in the top five in three of their last six appearances.
The Big Green lightweights are one of seven Ivy League teams to earn bids to the national championship. Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, Penn and Yale will also join Dartmouth. In addition to the varsity eight, the Big Green will also boat a four.
